As a child, I was taught to observe and appreciate the world around me. I have my mom to thank for my overwhelming love of nature. I talked to butterflies and played with baby lizards and horned toads. Mom taught me to replant worms that I dug up because they were good for the soil. We gently excavated doodle bugs from their homes then carefully returned them to dig again. My family would get up in the middle of the night to watch meteor showers and run outside during the day to see a beautiful cloud or to observe a rainbow. We fed cotton spiders (can’t stand spiders) and helped baby frogs and toads find moist spots during the dry summer.
So, last night, actually early this morning, I happened to wake up around 3:30 and remembered that the Perseid meteor shower should be in full swing. I headed to the backyard, pulled the lawn chair into the middle of the grass, leaned it back, and then sat in silence gazing at the sky. There is something awe-inspiring about a starry night. The peace and the beauty are quite enough to take my breath away. But there is something else. I feel my God, the creator of the universe, enjoying my company as I enjoy His creation! I get emotional even as I write.
Why would God want to spend time with me? I am so small and so seemingly insignificant. And yet, He desires to spend time with me! The beauty of this earth is an outpouring of His love for me. I cannot understand it but I humbly accept it.
As the gentle breeze blew across me this early morning, I felt His presence. I always feel His presence when I am enjoying His creation. Take time my friends to be still and know that He is God! Listen to the heartbeat of creation and you will feel His heartbeat in you.
Psalm 8:3-9 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the moon and the stars which You have set in place; What is mankind that You are mindful of them; humans beings, that You care for them? Yet you have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. You made them rulers over the works of Your hands; You put everything under their feet; all flocks and herds, and the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, and the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!
Psalm 46:10 Be still and know that I am God.
